Usually, the biggest betting tip, when it comes to the races, is to study the statistics. Speculating on the races is not about luck, or blindly betting on a horse because of its name or color - although we all love the Disney's legendary horses Seabiscuit, Hidalgo and, of course, Stripes (wait, stripes wasn't a horse!).

Here are some quick tips to add to your docket before betting on a horse:

Age, Sex, and Breed: Research what age majority of the winnders have been for the specific race or track.
Number of wins from starts: This may seem obvious, but uncovering the percentage of wins to losses of the horse is always a good indicator to how they race.
Record at the track: Who has raced this track before? It's beneficial to look at horses who have performed well on the track before. Advantage? I think so.
Experience and form in races of the same distance: Not all horses can last the distance of races like the 3200m Melbourne Cup. Research those that have performed consistently in races of the same distance as the current race.
Running style & Barrier Position: Very important. Like a human, the running style is important because certain running styles suit different starting positions. Like always, look at winning trends with the barrier number, which barrier numbers have the most victors started from?

Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome (EGUS), a term used to describe horses with gastric ulcers, refers to damage to the horse’s stomach lining from excessive stomach acid. This acid-induced damage can cause great discomfort, not to mention reduced performance and condition problems. In some cases, usually in foals, ulceration can be severe enough to cause death.

What are some of the causes of equine stomach ulcers?

All the risk factors for equine gastric ulcers have yet to be determined, but some of the more commonly encountered ones are presented below. It is important to note, however, that horses can develop severe ulcers even in the absence of these characteristic risk factors.

C-Horse, SeaBuck -- Sounds Like The Perfect Match, Eh?

A little over a month ago, I was approached by a guy named Dusty about trying a product out and seeing the effects it had on Prophet. Well, first off, my very first pony's name was Dusty, so I figured this guy couldn't be all that bad, but secondly, I'm pretty particular about what my horse ingests (ask anyone who's had to feed while I'm away - you nearly need a chemistry degree!). As soon as I got the email, I went to researching, and liked what I saw...

His product, Seabuck Complete, is a liquid made from the seabuckthorn plant that offers anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant functions. It's supposed to be a good, over-all supplement, helping with digestion, skin and coat health, etc... etc... One thing I was curious about was would it help with P's little habit of not eating all that well away from home... I agreed to try it out, as I really didn't see a downside.

So for the last 30 days I've been feeding Seabuck Complete, and I really like the results. First of all, Prophet actually ATE while we were at Lumber River Horse Trials (his prelim move-up). He's also been handling travel very well... not that he's ever been a BAD traveler, but I could definitely feel the difference after a couple hour trailer ride, which now he seems to unload as the same old P, just as he should! Whether you are a performer, a trainer, a breeder or a weekend rider, you want your horse to be healthy and performing at its peak. As you read and learn about the many different equine products that claim valuable health benefits, you will hear several terms that are often talked about but rarely explained. This article will briefly explain the important details surrounding the terms free radicals and antioxidants .

As a horse’s body functions on a daily basis, it is continually breaking down the nutrients from what it eats to obtain the energy it needs. This process is called oxidation. The level of activity determines the rate of oxidation. As the horse rests, the rate of oxidation is at its lowest level. However the rate of oxidation increases dramatically during times of stress, exercise, competition, growth, pregnancy, lactation, illness or even old age. During these times of rapid oxidation, the horse’s body more quickly breaks down nutrients (like protein, carbohydrates, and fat) to produce the increased energy it needs. This is where free radicals come into play. Think of them as bandits that wreak havoc on the horse’s body. Without getting too technical, they are molecules in the body that can be destructive to healthy cells. Free Radicals are generated as the horse’s oxidative process becomes overwhelmed by the stressful activities referred to above.

In reasonable amounts, free radicals are necessary to the proper function of the immune system, as they help destroy invading foreign organisms. On the other hand, larger amounts of circulating free radicals are harmful. They can cause tissue damage and cell death by destroying cell proteins, DNA, and fatty acids. Excessive amounts of free radicals leads to fatigue and damage of vital tissues such as muscle, nervous tissue, and skin. It can also lead to illness due to a decrease in immune function.
Now comes the exciting part about the antioxidants. The antioxidants are the soldiers that combat the serious damage caused by the free radicals (bandits). Antioxidants such as vitamin E, vitamin C, flavonoids, carotenoids ,glutathione, and selenium, to name a few, all have protective action against this damage.

I told the owner, that it is hard to believe that it is the same horse. Here is some information about the horse offered by the owner.

"4yo TB by Preakness winner Louis Quartorze. Had some serious thrush when I got him. My farrier said it's unbelievable the progress his feet have made with recovering. In the before picture you can see how he's leaning slightly back to avoid pressure on the feet effected by the thrush (fronts). This picture was taken the day I brought him home from the track. And of course his coat is very noticeable. He is outside most of the day and night and he is not faded in the least, in fact you can still see his dapples. No more biting. No more spooking when he's ridden. In fact, I ran into the trainer I got him from and he asked how the horse was with a chuckle. I asked why do you laugh? He mentioned that he had a hard time getting exercise riders at the track on him because of his attitude and behavior. I find this funny as he has not put a foot wrong, other than being green and not know where his feet are supposed to be, since I have had him. (He's for sale too if you know anyone looking) :-)There is really nothing unpleasing to the eye in the first picture until you look at the second picture! Even with horses that people think don't have a thing wrong, the horse is completely transformed."

"I am writing to tell you how happy I am with the results I have seen in my gelding after putting him on SeaBuck Complete. I was looking for an answer to my gelding's chronic COPD (Inflammatory Airway Disease) and I found it with your product."

Increased Stallion Motility - SeaBuck Complete

Over the past 3 years that SeaBuck Equine has been in business, we have had several unofficial trials done to observe the effects of Seabuck Complete on Stallion Motility.

In one case, an offer for $1,000,000 to buy a stallion (for breeding purposes) was turned down by a particular owner. This owner thought the stallion could go for more money. Upon testing the semen of this stallion, results came back showing only 20% motility. You can imagine the disappointment of the stallions owner, especially after passing up the offer for a million dollars. At this point, the owner came across SeaBuck Complete and started feeding it to the stallion. After about 60 days on SeaBuck Complete, without any other changes in eating or supplementation, semen tests came back at 80% motility. Needless to say, the owners disappointment turned to elation.
